3.5 stars

This is the second book I’ve read by Richards, and she continues to impress me! While this one didn’t grab me in quite the same way that Asylum 54.0 did, it was still an enjoyable read.

Burning Bridges is the first book in the “Bleeding Heart” series. It has the feel of Romeo and Juliet combined with The Hunger Games. Echo and Ayden are from very different backgrounds, but love sees beyond borders and boundaries. The action starts from the start. Even though the story takes place in the future, Echo is a strong character who is relatable in many ways. While there are a few lulls, it does pack back up in the last third of the story. If you enjoy YA and/or dystopian stories, this is one book (author, actually!) to add to your TBR pile. I look forward to reading the sequel.

Burning Bridges Volume 1 Nadege Richards Silviya Yordanova Carley Zucco 9781470102791 Books Reviews

A beautiful and heart wrenching tale. Burning Bridges takes place in the future, a future that feels like the past, such a unique and wonderful setting. Although, just like in the middle ages, there is so much heartbreak and unfair treatment of the "little people" who actually do all the work! Typical tyranny. Here we meet Echo and you just know something is different about his girl. She is the princess, but in her heart knows her father, the king is wrong and cruel. At the beginning of book, Echo and her love Ayden are set to fight to the death in the arena, but they refuse because they love each other more than life itself! Then we get swept back in time to right before they meet, and the story unfolds from there. She meets Ayden and loves him so, but not immediately, but there is something between them that they can't deny, and they can't stop seeking each other out. As she gets to know him more, secrets are slowly revealed, secrets that will change everything! Echo always follows her heart, and it does not steer her wrong! Excitement, betrayal, love, sadness, giggles, danger, this book has it all!
The book ends with a wrap up of this portion of the story, but we are left at a cliff hanger for what is to come, the next part of Echo's long journey still lies ahead. We never get back to the battle arena scene in the beginning, which just makes my heart ache thinking about what is to come. Can't wait to dive into book 2, Deceiving Destiny.
So I've always been a huge fan of dystopian style books, the only problem with this is that somehow I accidentally have gotten my 58 year old father into YA dystopian books as well. This might not seem like a big deal, but he reads very slow and insists that I read all the books that he reads before he does, so he doesn't waste his time with a bad book. Kind of a raw deal, since I've unfortunately read a LOT of bad dystopian books filtering for him. I really got to the point where I started to feel a bit jaded, trying to stay away from this brand of books, just because I was getting overwhelmed with it. I've been eying this book for quite some time, but never really had the courage to finally read it until I realized how close the author was getting to 100 reviews, and I really wanted to try to help out with her goal. I'm super glad I finally gave it a chance!

This book has really restored my faith in the genre. The author has created a colourful and intriguing world that's unlike any I've read before. The characters are so very well developed that I couldn't help but cheer/cry/laugh with them as they experienced different aspects of their lives. I was most impressed with Echo as a character. There's nothing I love more in a YA novel than a strong and willful heroine. Echo has these qualities in spades. Although she's the heir to the throne, she doesn't act like you would expect a princess to act. As royalty, I expected an abundance of bustles and tea parties, not sword fighting and defiance toward her king. I am so impressed by her! Ayden is a strong hero for his strong heroine. He's hardly out of his childhood, yet he is basically the sole provider for his family. He may not make the most honest decisions, but he does what he has to do in order to take care of his family. I found this to be an admirable trait.

I felt that the start of the book was a little slow, but considering the vast detail in the world created, I really can't fault the author for that. Once I got to about 25% of the book, the rest just flew by. It was that point where the plot really seemed to take off and it was more story than backstory and explanations.

I definitely loved this book, and have probably earned a nice month of peace from my dystopian lovin' dad.
