Did you know that shame is a dampener to happiness and excitement and that it is triggered when we desire and expect something and that something that we want is interrupted? Neither did I!
I first started reading this book a year ago and put it down because it was so long and drawn out. I recently picked it up again and I am 70% of the way through the book. I will say that the book is verbose and sometimes eloquent, but it is also filled with brilliance and a deep understanding of what underlies shame, which keeps me turning the page. I value my time and I tend to avoid books that are flowery and unnecessarily wordy. I want the book to get to the point. While I find this book to be wordy, I endured and continued reading because there were so many deep insights into shame that very much deepened my understanding of the roots of shame and how it affects all of us, often unknowingly. I think that this book is a hidden gem of insight and knowledge. It is a long read, but worth the time. It's amazing how shame is at the root of so many behaviors from anger, to shyness, to narcissism, to co-dependence, to avoidance, to depression and to our unwillingness to explore our unconscious (which is a storehouse of shame that we have refused to deal with).

This can give in depth explanation for some of the possible reasons an individual may feel shame and can be a strongly assistive tool in understanding what behaviors may be in accompaniment.
A book that changed my life. Changed and saved my life I often say. Now who am I to say that and why pay attention to me? I am a "Family Doctor" who from the very beginning decided to take his trade seriously and try and treat the family and the whole person. We, as few realize, are able to prescribe all the psychiatric drugs available and are expected to recognize and at least refer, if not treat, major and minor psychiatric illnesses. The need is great for this kind of care. Look around you. I had always been interested in the psychiatric side of care but felt much was lacking and was always teaching myself.

Despite reading many "Great Books" when people ask me what the most important book in my life is I have to say it is "Shame and Pride" by Donald Nathanson because not being 2/3 through it I knew my practice of medicine would forever change. Through his clear and precise prose he taught me and brought me into the world of Silvan S. Tomikins and began to introduce me to the never ending exploration of the concept of shame as Tomkins defines it. It captures so much of our essence in a brilliant contribution summarizing much of shames influence in our life in what is called the "Compass of Shame." Equally importantly, for my part, he introduced me to the world of "interest" as a full blown emotion.

Most importantly we are left with a work not specifically on mental heath and its intricacies but on the human being. Tomkins produced a theory of the human being. This being the case one quickly sees how this new way of seeing can be applied with great benefit to any area of life.

Haven't gotten through book yet but highly recommended by my therapist so i highly recommend.
Simply wow. I usually don't buy books in print anymore but this one was really worth it.
As it brings together and overtakes other modes of thinking about human psychology, this one really opened me up to the unseen omnipresence of shame and how it controls our actions.
I may have become a little more free thanks to this book.
I'm not saying nothing in here is interesting or of value. But, it lacks editing. I found it extremely dull. EXTREMELY dull.
