I did enjoy the book, although I didnt have much trouble with the identity of the killer. I think this may be due to that I read a lot of murder mysteries. If I had one knock on it, it was that at times it read almost like one of those movies with an incredible amount of violence that were also murder mysteries. People do tend to die in gruesome ways in this book, with some graphic descriptions. While this doesnt particularly bother me, it may bother some.Tags : Murder on the Iditarod Trail (Alaska Mysteries) [Sue Henry] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <em>The winner of Alaska's world-famous Iditarod -- a grueling, eleven-hundred-mile dog sled race across a frigid Arctic wilderness---takes home a $250,Sue Henry,Murder on the Iditarod Trail (Alaska Mysteries),Avon,0380717581,Mystery & Detective - General,Mystery and detective stories.,Crime & mystery,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,Fiction Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,MASS MARKET,Mystery & Detective - Police Procedural,Mystery & Detective - Women Sleuths,MysterySuspense

It is a hard, cold ride on the sled as you race over the frozen and icy trail of the Iditarod. There is enough perils that can befall you and then suddenly you can't turn the sled and your airborne. The sled going one way and your dogs going another...
If you love dogs, Alaska, and a really good murder/mystery you'll enjoy Murder on the Iditarod Trail. Sue Henry does her due diligence and does a great job investigating what she is writing about and has her facts down pact. Her characters are familiar and you find yourself riding along with them. I really enjoyed ever spin, turn and surprise that she took me along the trail.
I have now read three of her stories and have just purchased three more. She develops her characters really well. In the third book, Sleeping Lady, she told the story from multiple prespectives, including that of a bear.
The Iditarod, sometimes called "The Last Great Race," takes mushers, (dog sled racers), and their dog teams over 1150 miles of some of Alaska's roughest, most majestic terrain - jagged mountain ranges, iced-over areas of Norton Sound, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coastline. The temperatures frequently fall well below zero, with winds that can cause complete loss of visibility. Hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills are always present. From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days. The winner takes home a $250,000 purse. But one has to be alive to collect it. This year's race has a major impediment to arriving at the finish line in one piece. It seems as if one of the contestants is eliminating the competition by cruel, unusual and permanent means.
Top Iditarod mushers are dying on the trail in the most gruesome and bizarre ways. Three deaths have occurred before the halfway mark is reached in a race that has never claimed a life in its entire history. Jessie Arnold, the top female contender, is determined to win and not allow the terrible deaths/murders of her friends and colleagues to deter or distract her from her goal.
State Trooper Alex Jensen, a gifted investigator, as well as a handsome bachelor, meets the attractive Jessie during the race and the two are immediately drawn to each other. Already committed to finding the killer before he/she can do any more harm, Jensen is especially anxious for Jessie, as she is now favored to win, and has thus become a bigger threat to the murderer. As more victims fall prey to mysterious injuries, Jensen realizes that the killer is after more than money and prestige.
Although Sue Henry's "Murder on the Iditarod Trail" is filled with suspense, I must admit to being more thrilled/awed/terrified with the description of the race, the weather and its dangers, which seem much more difficult to evade than the threatened actions of a vicious, determined murderer. This excellent mystery really gives one an understanding of what a tough foe Mother Nature can be. The author wisely couples the disturbing details surrounding the murders with the dangers of the climate and the trail to build tension and rivet the reader to the page.
The Iditarod is not just a dog sled race. It is a race in which unique men and woman, from all walks of life, compete. Man and animal are pitted against nature, and as each mile is covered, a tribute is paid to Alaska's past. The Iditarod Trail, now a National Historic Trail, had its beginnings as a mail and supply route from the coastal towns of Seward and Knik to the interior mining camps at Flat, Ophir, Ruby and beyond to the west coast communities of Unalakleet, Elim, Golovin, White Mountain and Nome. Mail and supplies went in. Gold came out. All via dog sled. Heroes were made back then, and legends were born.
A fascinating and compelling read!

The best thing about this book is not the plot, which is somewhat predictable, but the descriptions of Alaska and in particular the Iditarod Trail and the running of the race. The author describes every major aspect of the terrain, what it means to run the race, how the dogs are attended to, the hardships the mushers face, etc. Altogether fascinating! And it's a great story besides -- very engrossing but easy to read. Sure, the handsome Alaska State Trooper falls for the beautiful, tough, independent Iditarod aspirant -- how could he not? Great read.
I enjoyed this book set during the annual running of the Iditarod Dogsled Race. This is a cozy mystery with a bit of a love story mixed in. I especially liked how the details about the race were woven into the mystery. I never knew that the racers had equipment and food cached at different points along the race.
If you enjoy mysteries set in Alaska I highly recommend that you read Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak and Liam Campbell series. Both are available on
I enjoyed this book so much. The title pretty much tells you what it's about--the murders of Iditarod participants along the various legs of the race. Very interesting descriptions of the competition and the conditions under which it occurs. I waffled on how to describe the violence. I hesitate to tar the book with the "graphic" brush; the deaths are violent but not slasher-film violent. The story is excellently paced. I look forward to reading other books in this series. A ripping good yarn!
This is definitely stated by the author to be fictional. There has never been a murder on the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. Jesse is one of a very few select women who train all year for the Iditarod Race. She has placed fifth before and hopes to win this year. But several suspicious accidents begin to happen and some of the mushers are being killed. Four Alaska State Troopers are called to the race to investigate. One of them Alec Jensen begins to take a personal interest in Jesse. You will learn a lot of the behind the scenes work that goes into the race as you try to figure out who is the person killing off the mushers.
While this doesnt particularly bother me, it may bother some.
